Fear looms as another fire outbreak occurs in Lagos International Airport

 

Again, a major fire outbreak was Thursday averted at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, MMIA, Lagos.

According to National Mirror, the fire incident, which occurred at exactly 11.30am, our correspondent learnt, emanated from the Avio Bridge E-54 at the terminal. It took the timely intervention of fire fighters of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, for the fire and smoke which enveloped the entire environment to be put off.


 Reason for the fire incident remained unknown as at the time of filing this report, but a source close to the terminal said the incident may not be unconnected with the inferior cables used by contractors in the recent remodeling exercise, spearheaded by former Minister of Aviation, Princess Stella Oduah.


But, the acting spokesperson of FAAN, Mrs. Henrietta Yakubu, in a telephone conversation with our correspondent debunked the fire incident claim, saying it was a spark from one of the cables at the airport.
Our correspondent learnt that it took almost an hour for the fire to be put out. The incident also disrupted flight activities in and out of the airport while it lasted.
Besides, our correspondent gathered that the entire water in the fire tender
was exhausted within minutes and the fire fighters had to refill the tank in order to finally quench the raging inferno.
A statement by Yakubu described the incident as a hitch. She said power has
been restored shortly after the spark that happened at the Finger Main Distribution Board at the E-Finger of the airport.
The statement hinted that the spark occurred at the E-Finger of the airport at about 11.30am. The statement added:
“However, the engineers successfully corrected all defaults and normalcy was restored at affected areas.
“While assuring airport users of safety and security at our airports, FAAN wishes to apologise to passengers, airlines and the general public for the inconvenience caused by this interruption.”
